In November 2009, our community health trip encountered a number of cases of children who had been handed over to other families for being too great a burden on the child’s biological family. Unfortunately, this social relationship known as “restavek” often leads to neglect or worse. Given the health implications of this system of informal foster care, we found it important to publicize this issue more broadly. A full article describing our findings and the greater context in which this systematized neglect occurs can be found at the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene’s website at www.ajtmh.org.
